The family tree of a public item shows its published relatives (see Family tree views). Public trees can be very large, so the torch shows a part at a time.
What the torch does #
The torch lights the nodes nearest the centre item (the centre counted) and dims the rest. Dim dots at the edge of the light are hints that the tree goes on; they carry no names or numbers, and look the same for everyone.
Free #
- The torch lights 20 nodes and is always on. The viewer says: "The torch lights the 20 nodes nearest the centre. Premium and Professional can tune the count or turn it off."
- Click a dim dot at the edge of the light to move the centre there. This way a Free account can browse a whole public tree, a little at a time.
- The 50-item Free limit in Private is a separate thing: it limits how many items you can keep and link in your own account, not what you can browse in Public.
Paid plans #
In the view's options, the Torch group has a Torch switch and a Nodes lit count. The count goes from 1 up to the whole family; with the torch off, everything is shown. The count is remembered; in the Constellation views the torch starts off.
Hidden relatives: the "?" boxes #
- A "?" box is a private item you may not see. Only its ID or a count is shown, so the shape of the tree stays honest without showing private data.
- A number, as in "? (3)", means a run of hidden generations between public items; the number is only a count.
- A plain "?" is a private branch that ends there.
- Press a "?" box (or Enter) for a small menu with the owner as a link, when the owner is shown.
Withdrawn items #
An item that was published and then retracted is shown as withdrawn in public trees and on its public link. Its links and lineage are kept, so other people's trees do not break.
