Lineage in BreedMap is a set of links between items: parents above, children below. Generation badges show G1, G2 and so on. Links can cross projects and even accounts.
Before you start #
- Both items must exist. To link a new child, + Add child makes it for you.
- Open one of them: Private > the project > the item's tile.
- You need write access to the item, and it must not be checked out by someone else (Link existing is hidden then).
- Linking someone else's item also needs a connection.
- On Free you can link up to 50 items in total. There is no limit on the number of children or parents per item.
Add a child #
On the item page press + Add child. The Add child or link existing dialog opens on a new child: a new item with this item as a parent. Pick the relation (for example clone, subculture, sport, cross with a second parent) and finish. The child is created in the same project.
Link two existing items #
- On the item page press Link existing.
- Choose what the other item is: Its parent (the chosen item becomes a parent of this one) or Its child.
- Pick the relation.
- Find the item by name or code from the recent items, the matches or Browse all, or press Scan QR to scan its label (phones only).
- Press Link.
Link someone else's item #
- In Link existing choose Someone else's item? Link by ID or scan.
- Type its item ID or label link, or scan its QR code or barcode, and press Find.
- What happens next depends on the other item:
- A published item can be linked at once. Its owner is told, and can flag the link but not remove it.
- A private item: its owner gets a request (Send request) and has 30 days to answer. Until then, or if they decline, the relative shows as "?".
Your item becomes your first item in that line. On Free, a Level check box shows that Free shows 3 levels above it and allows 7 levels of offspring below it, and how many levels are used. Paid plans have no such limit.
The lineage view #
The lineage view on an item page shows parents and earlier generations above, the item in the middle and children below, with generation badges and status dots. Tap a relative to put it in the middle. A relative you may not see is shown as "?". For the full views see Family tree views.

- Showing items from several projects together in one family tree view is not available yet.
- Retracting a published item keeps its links and lineage.
