Import data

Bring BreedMap backups (.zip) or CSV files into your projects, merged by name or as new projects.

An import adds the items, projects and lineage from a BreedMap backup or a CSV file to your workspace as new records.

Before you start #

  • Be signed in and online.
  • A BreedMap backup (.zip) needs the password the app showed when the export was made. Kid accounts import only into their own account.

Steps #

  1. Open User info menu > My account > Data & storage > Import > Import…. Or, in New project, choose Import from a file….
  2. Choose or drag in BreedMap backups (.zip) or CSV files (Choose files…). Several files at once work. A backup shows "Needs its password": type the password of this file.
  3. Choose how projects are handled:
    • Merge into my projects with the same name: each project in the file joins your project with the same name (a new project if you have none). Items that look like ones you already have can be skipped.
    • Import into a new project: each project in the file becomes a new project, even if you already have one with that name.
  4. Press Check file (or Check files). The app reads the files and reports what it found.
  5. Fix what it reports. A name that already exists: Rename or Skip (a skipped item is not imported). Then press Import.

What to expect after an import #

  • Everything imported is added as new records. Nothing already in your account is overwritten.
  • Imported items start private, also when they were public in the account they came from. Publish them again if you want them in Public.
  • Imported items get their own new short codes and QR codes. Old labels do not open the new items.
  • Care reminders are not restored. The care log and the history are, when the backup includes them.
  • On Free, an import past 50 items still goes ahead, but the items over the limit are read-only until a paid plan or deleting items unlocks them.

CSV files #

A CSV file is the simplest way to bring in a list of items from a spreadsheet. The CSV export of BreedMap itself (Export your data) shows the expected columns: items, parents and field values. Photos and settings do not travel in CSV.
