Search: items, people and species

The search field finds public items, people and your own items; the species search finds scientific and common names from Catalogue of Life.

BreedMap has two kinds of search: the general search field at the top of the screen, and the species search inside the project and item wizards.

  • Type in the search field at the top ("Search public items, people, your items"), or press the / key to jump to it. It searches public items and projects, people, and your own items.
  • Press Enter for all results in tabs: All, Public, Private and People.
  • Case and accents do not matter. Owner names and @handles work too.
  • Searching Public and People needs a connection. With the Search Public/People switch (Sync options menu) off, the drop-down lists only your own items, and the results page searches Public and People only when you press Sync.

The Search species (scientific or common name) field is in two places:

  • New project, step 1 "Name", under "Species".
  • Add item, step "Species": choose Another species for this item (or Choose a species), then the same field.

How it works:

  1. Type at least 3 letters. The search starts by itself shortly after you stop typing. Press Enter to search at once.
  2. It needs a connection and the Taxonomy search switch on (Sync options menu or Settings menu). Offline, or with the switch off, only names already saved on this device are found, and the screen says so.
  3. Pick a row. The field then shows the chosen name with "Verified" and a Change button, and the species card shows the rank and the classification from kingdom down to the species.

Names in other languages and group words #

Besides scientific and English common names, the search also understands names in other languages (Finnish too) and group words, for example "osterivinokas", "susi" or "sammakko". BreedMap works out which species a word probably means and looks those up. This extra lookup runs when you press Enter and the normal search found nothing; the note under the field then says "Showing matches for …" with the scientific names it used. A group word can give several species and genera.

Every result is a real entry from Catalogue of Life or BreedMap. Names that cannot be found are never made up. If nothing is found, the screen says "No matches." and offers Not found? Use my own name … (unverified), which saves the name as your own, unverified name.

Where the species is used #

  • In a project, the species fills the project's classification (kingdom down to species, breed, cultivar or strain). You can stop at any level.
  • In an item, Another species for this item sets a species different from the project's; with Also use it as the project's Classification it becomes the project's species too.
