Family tree views: Tree, Flat and Constellation

See an item's lineage as a tree, a flat layout or a 3D constellation, trace ancestry and filter what is shown.

The family tree views show the lineage around an item: parents and earlier generations, the item itself, and its offspring. The same views exist for your own items in Private and for published items in Public.

Before you start #

  • Open an item: Private > the project > the item's tile, or open a public item in Public.
  • The family tree of public items needs a connection.

The three layouts #

Family tree offers three layouts around the item:

  • Tree: parents above, children below. Works on every plan.
  • Flat: a flat layout of the same lineage. Needs a paid plan.
  • Constellation: items as stars in 3D. Needs a paid plan.

On Free, Flat and Constellation show a read-only sample tree of about 500 stars instead, with the banner "Demo of a Premium view: sample data, not your tree." Press Back to my tree to return to your own.

Tree #

  • Press Show more generations above or Show more generations below to load more of the lineage. A large tree shows the nearest relatives first.
  • Make this the centre moves the centre to another item.
  • From an item's menu in the item list you can also choose Show in family tree view or Highlight in family tree view.

Constellation #

  • Two shapes: Rings (generations stacked as rings) or Ball (for big trees).
  • Drag to turn, use two fingers or the mouse wheel to zoom. Pause motion stops the turning.
  • From an item's menu: Show in constellation.

Tools in every view #

  • Trace ancestry highlights the line from the earliest ancestor down to this item.
  • Filter: show or dim items by relation, trait, status, dates or name. Choose Include or Exclude; Dim keeps the filtered items faint, Hide removes them. Filters last for this session only.
  • Legend & style changes colours and line styles.
  • Torch: in large public trees the torch lights the nodes nearest the centre and dims the rest. See Torch view.

Hidden relatives #

A relative you may not see (someone else's private item) is shown as a "?" box, so the shape of the tree stays honest without showing private data. A retracted item is shown as withdrawn. More in Torch view.

Good to know #

  • Lineage links already work across projects, but showing items from several projects together in one view is not available yet.
  • The demo project (Add demo project (500 stars) in Private, Personal workspace) is a read-only sample project for trying the views. It needs a connection.
