App updates and versions

How the Android app updates, what "Update required" means, where the version is shown, and how the browser version updates.

Android #

When a newer version exists, a banner says "Update available (v…)", with the new build and the one on this phone.

  1. Press "Update" (the button also shows the download size in MB). The banner shows "Downloading…"; "Cancel" stops it.
  2. When the file is downloaded and checked, press "Install" and let Android confirm the update.
  3. The first time, Android asks you to allow installs from BreedMap: press "Open settings", switch on "Allow from this source" and come back. The update then goes on by itself.

"Not now" closes the banner until the next check.

"Update required" means this version of BreedMap is no longer supported: install the update to go on.

Check now and see the version #

Settings page (gear icon > "All settings…" > "Account, pending changes, about…") > "About" shows the "Version" with its build number. On Android, "Check for updates" checks now and answers for example "BreedMap is up to date." A check is allowed about once a minute ("Too many checks. Try again in a minute.").

"Test builds" (Android, About) also offers test builds made from work in progress. It is for testers only; leave it off otherwise.

If the update fails #

The banner says what went wrong and what to do:

  • "Not enough free space on this phone": free up space and try again.
  • "The download stopped: the connection was lost" or "The download failed": try again later.
  • "The downloaded file was damaged (its check did not match). Nothing was installed.": try again; nothing was changed on the phone.
  • "The server did not allow this download. Sign in and try again.": sign in first.
  • "Android could not open the installer": try again; if Android still refuses, allow installs from BreedMap in Android's settings.

An update keeps your data: projects, items and settings stay as they are.

Browser #

The browser version updates itself: reload the page to get the newest one. Your data stays in the browser's storage and on the server.

  • Signing in again after an update is not needed. If a device was signed out from another device, see Security.
  • Changes waiting to be sent are listed on the Settings page under "Pending"; sync them before a long update on a poor connection.
