Glossary

The words BreedMap uses, from project and item to workspace, seat and torch.

Short definitions of the words you meet in the app. Screen names are written as the app shows them.

Projects, items and cards #

  • Project: a set of items, for example one species, one line or one collection, together with the card (the fields) you fill in for them. Every item of a project uses the project's card.
  • Item: one individual: a plant, culture, animal, brew batch or other organism, with a name, generation, status, field values, photos, a care log and links to parents and offspring.
  • Short code: every item gets a short visible code (for example K7M2QX). Codes leave out 0/O and 1/I so they are easy to read from a label. A new item starts with the code as its name.
  • Card, fields and templates: the card is the list of fields an item shows (Text, Number, Date or Yes / no). A template is a saved card you can reuse for new projects. Ready cards come with the app (Plant, Mushroom culture, Animal, Brew batch, Blank card). Shared lists are saved lists of values (for example colours) that fields can use.
  • Lineage, generation: items linked as parents and children. Generation badges show G1, G2 and so on.
  • Family tree: the lineage views of the items: the Tree, Flat and Constellation layouts.
  • Care log: a diary of what was done (watering, feeding, pruning, repotting, treatment, or your own types).
  • Care reminders and Care agenda: planned care (tasks, events, alerts) on items, and one list of what is due across everything you may see.
  • QR label: a printable label with the item's QR code and short code; scanning it opens the item. Labels are designed and printed in the label designer.

Private and Public #

  • Private: the section where you work: your workspaces, projects and items. Only you and the people in your workspace see it.
  • Public: the public registry: published items in their latest published version. Anyone can see it, also without an account. You browse and follow there; editing happens in Private.
  • Publish / Retract: "Publish" puts an item's public page on Public (after a preview). "Retract" takes it off again; it is then shown as "withdrawn".
  • Followers / following: you can follow public projects, people and public items. Followers are the people who follow you, your projects or your items.

Accounts and workspaces #

  • Workspace / account: the place your projects and items live in. Types: Personal (one person), Family (a household, hobby use only) and Company (a business), plus Family member and Kid account seats inside a family. The header and the user menu always show which workspace you are in. See Accounts, workspaces and switching.
  • Saved login: an email login saved on this device (up to 5), so you can switch to it without a new code.
  • Family ID and Company ID: the unique ID of a family (for example FAM-8H2M-31PC) or of a company. Names can repeat, IDs never do. Knowing an ID never lets anyone in by itself.
  • Kid account: the account of a child under 15 inside a family. It has up to 2 guardians (adults of the family) and kid limits.
  • Licence / plan: Free, or a paid plan: Premium (Single User licence, one person), Family, or Professional for companies.
  • Seat: a place in a family or company licence that the main admin or owner gives to a person.
  • Messages: in-app messages between people. Friends and contacts write to your Inbox; others land in the Other mailbox.

Sync and devices #

  • Sync: BreedMap is offline first. Changes are saved on the device at once and sent to the server when you sync.
  • Check-out: while an item is checked out on one device, nobody else can edit it until it is checked in.
  • Recovery key and account PIN: ways to open your data on this device when the device's own unlock cannot. See Security.
