📜History | The name Maltese does not signify that the breed originates from the island of Malta; rather, it comes from the Semitic word 'màlat', meaning refuge or harbour. Known in Ancient Rome and praised by Latin poet Strabo, the breed has been depicted by Renaissance painters alongside beautiful ladies. |
